Dangerous email scam targets Beatles fans [Posted by Dave Haber on Wednesday, 08/20/08 7:21 pm] [Full Blog] [Tweet This]A computer forensics expert at the University of Alabama at Birmingham has warned email messages with the subject line "The Beatles - Back Together Again" is a dangerous email scam that tries to lure you into clicking on a fake link, which then installs malicious software on their computer.
Gary Warner, who operates UAB's Spam Data Mine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, said that at least 36 percent of e-mails received Tuesday morning pointed to a malware site. Other fake subject lines included "Weekly Top News" and "You've received a greeting card."
Last week, hundreds of millions of spam messages were sent impersonating CNN and MSNBC. Spammers have impersonated major Internet sites, including news sites, for years. In 2006, a widespread spam campaign impersonated the BBC Web site.
Remember, don't open email from addresses you don't recognize, and don't ever click on links in email you're not sure about.
