Northern California-based Beatles tribute band The Beatles Project has a new Ringo Starr and landed a gig almost as good as The Ed Sullivan Show.

Jim Sanders, full-time Merced city councilman and part-time rock star, told us some time back that the tribute band went on hiatus after his brother, the drummer, retired because he didn't have time to fulfill his rhythmly duties.

Fortunately, the band tapped another stickman, Greg Sprearance, who had served as their roadie. He's even earned the nickname Grengo (pronounced Gringo), Sanders said. The band's going to spend some time practicing at Shabby Road before they're ready to rock 'n' roll.

Sanders also let it leak that The Beatles Project will headline the 2009 Merced County Fair and may also be playing a gig at The Partisan for the Amgen bike race.
