Original Grateful Dead bandmembers perform Imagine and Blackbird [Posted by Katie Hickox on Monday, 06/22/09 8:58 pm] [Comments] [Full Blog] [Tweet This]Who would have thought that the Grateful Dead could play Beatles and John Lennon songs?
Mickey Hart and Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead opened their set playing a jam version of 'Blackbird' and ended their set with 'Imagine' for a small group in Marin Saturday afternoon at a fundraiser to help California Senator Barbara Boxer. Bob sang the lead vocals with Mickey playing drums. Boxer spoke briefly before introducing them to the audience.
The lunchtime event was held outside at a lovely venue near San Anselmo that was high on a hill and had beautiful terraced gardens. Bob Weir had written out the set list which included just a few Grateful Dead songs such as FOD which stands for 'Friend of the Devil'. When asked what inspired him to perform 'Imagine', he said 'a request was made from one of the hosts' and this year was the first time they had ever performed 'Imagine' in concert.
Bob remembered all the words to 'Imagine' and the band all did a great job on the song. The author was pleased to be in such highly esteemed company and was at the right place at the right time to get a photo taken with Bob and Mickey.
