UK music mogul says Paul McCartney should retire
Paul McCartney should hang up his electric guitar for good, according to music mogul Alan McGee. Speaking to the Daily Record, the former Creation record label chief, who helped groups like Oasis become famous, said music was a young person's game. "Music should be like football. You don't have 66-year-old football players. There's a reason for that." [More...] Pages: << < 1 2 3 4 > >> Comments: If music actually were like football, or any other sport, then only qualified people, like McCartney would be playing. Instead, we are inundated with no-talents like Oasis and American Idols. There's a reason for that... Posted by EdSullivan from Syracuse, NY on January 28, 2010 09:33 AM
Alan McGee displays abysmal knowledge of music history. It is routine for composers, conductors and--yes--performers not only to continue to work for their entire lives, but to do better and better work the older they get. Posted by qlady from Wisconsin on January 28, 2010 09:49 AM
McGee said that he believed as rock stars get older, they lose perspective and don't produce the same calibre of music. What a Joke! I guess Alan McGee never bothered to listen to Paul McCartney’s “Memory almost full” or “Electric Arguments”. I wonder if Alan McGee attended or listened to Paul’s “Good Evening New York” concert or any of those concerts that followed. Or could it be that Paul didn’t sign an autograph for Alan? Is this guy kidding? He worked for a record company and has such little understaning of 'music' (guess that in itself says a lot). I saw Stefan Grapelli perform when he was 90 years old and his perfomance was wonderful. There is no reason that any musician in any genre should stop if they still have a love for it, are capable and have an aunce. Paul happens to be the most successful musician in history and at 67 is still young and any of his recent concerts would have blown a lot of 'young' bands off the stage. He can't be serious, this supposed music mogul, can he? Does this person think there should be a 'Logan's run' in music, for guitar player's? For singers? What an incredible idiot if he is serious by stating such a thing. It must be a ploy to bring attention to some project this 'mogul' be involved with... Paul is well into his 2nd renaissance of music, post-Beatles. His 70's music solo and with Wings and pretty much everything he's done since Flaming Pie in '97 is great to listen to. And his performances since 2002 are not to be missed!...
This mogul is a fraud to utter such nonsense! Paul is still a better bass and guitar player than most out there! Just watch him live or listen to his recordings and try to find a better artist...you can't! Posted by Brady Wiebeck from Lincoln, NE USA on January 28, 2010 12:17 PM
Why does this ageism still exist in the music industry? Quite odd, especially considering some of Sir Paul's recent albums have been among the best out of his entire solo career. Posted by Hyle Russell on January 28, 2010 1:01 PM
Mr. McGee should shut up! McCartney has more talent than Oasis ever have. If you've seen him in concert this past decade, you'd know he can still rock with the best of them (even the ones half his age). Posted by DeMo from Westland, Michigan on January 28, 2010 1:25 PM
Would he also say this about Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones? Mick Jagger is only a year younger than Paul and Keith Richards is about a year and a half younger.Bob Dylan is a year older than Paul. Posted by Anonymous from US on January 28, 2010 1:59 PM
Obviously Alan McGee must need the publicity with sad comments like that... well I suppose you have to feel sorry for him... lets face it what has he ever done? Posted by Noel Gallager on January 28, 2010 2:37 PM
I'm glad to see everyone agrees! Paul is amazing... no doubt about it. I'm 13 and he's my idol. If he's still leaving 13 year old girls in awe 40 years later, than the man is amazing. He's a great guitar player, songwriter, singer, bass player, etc. Paul does everything right! He's the reason that I'm a guitar player. I saw him in Washington on August 1, BEST DAY OF MY LIFE. Paul McCartney is the best. LONG LIVE THE BEATLES! Posted by Beatlesfan1996 from NJ on January 28, 2010 5:10 PM
Maybe that's why music today is in the bad state that it's in. People like this are in charge. Posted by Dean from Lakeside Park, KY on January 28, 2010 5:41 PM
"You don't see 66 year old football players-there's a reason for that". Yes, the reason is because no one pays to watch 66 year old football players. Duh! Posted by Dave from Akron, Ohio on January 28, 2010 6:44 PM
