Zemeckis is a Blue Meanie for Beatles fans
Will the Beatles legacy be cheapened by the new movie? In the absence of new music, The Beatles are a commodity, something to be infinitely repackaged and sold to a nostalgic audience. But any fan with half a brain can distinguish The White Album from Kidz Bop Sings The Beatles. Make no mistake: This new Yellow Submarine is a money grab. [More...] Comments: I would have to say that as a long time Beatlefan (Over FORTY years! Where has the time gone?) my vote leans toward the "What's the point?" side. I don't think Mr. Zemeckis, who I totally admire as a filmmaker, can improve on such a wonderful, magical and fantasmagorical celluloid artifact that is a major part of the Beatles legacy. John Lennon sums up my thoughts...when asked if the Beatles were ever going to get back together again he said "You can't reheat a souffle'...!" Or maybe it was Paul who said that... Nevertheless, I try to remain positive and give this new version a chance. I just hope it fares much better than the train wreck that was known as "Across the Universe"! That's right, I said it! Good article. I am a younger Beatle fan, born in 1980, so I am one of the people that keeps getting talked about in all of these articles. I didn't care for ACross the Universe one bit. I have attempted 3 times to watch it and I shut it off each time. I'm sure this movie do fine as long as it doesn't inject too much "new" material. Keep the soundtrack the same and it be fine. Is it in 3D? I think I read that somewhere. That make it better. Posted by John L from VA Beach on February 2, 2010 09:14 AM
Don't quite understand the problem with a remake of this movie. It won't effect the standing of the original one bit. It's being made by Disney, they've had a bit of sccess with cartoon films I hear.. besides they can use ANY Beatle songs they want, and I'm sure they'll be an accompaning CD, which I'm sure be DIGITALLY REMIXED like the "Yellow Submarine Songtrack" was, it's a chance to hear what should have been done to the remasters but wasn't (as great as they sound). Possibly even a Surround sound CD. Either way, good or bad, the film doesn't touch the legacy of the original, what's the problem? Posted by Maclen from Deer Park, NY on February 2, 2010 11:49 AM
It's not a problem, as you state. But it dilutes the value of the original to say there is another one that is designed to be better, whether it is or not. Sure, Disney has deep pockets and can easily afford to pay Sony for Beatle songs, but they might just as soon have the BeeGees or Elton John sing them instead. So the great fear is that we end up with yet another "Sergent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club" or "Tommy". Then nobody wants to see either of them again. The thing is, theyve announced that they be using the real deal, BEATLES songs, so no Bee Gees, Elton John et all. But think about it, as ghastly as the Bee Gees Sgt Pepper movie was, did it affect the standing of the original album one single bit? Still considered the #1 album of all-time according to many surveys, so I repeat this movie does not affect the standing of the original. Think about it, if they remade "Gone With The Wind" and it was horrible, does the orginal suffer as a result? Why would it, it's a completely seperate entity. Well I'm not sure it's a good idea to remake a great movie when it was perfect the 1st time mostly because 2 of the beatles aren't alive to do it and the the other 2 aren't going to do it. But if it's Disney doing it and it's not tacky and poorly done, I'll give it a chance. Posted by Taxman from nj on February 5, 2010 09:17 AM
The reason a re-make of "Gone with the Wind" has never been attempted in over 70 years is that no one has the unmitigated gall to admit they intentionally defiled a masterpiece. Now, if they cut and pasted Clarke Gable and Vivian Leigh into the re-make, that would be it all right, wouldn't it? But then it's neither "new" nor "completely separate".
