Balloons released to pay tribute to John Lennon in Liverpool
Friday 8th October, 2010 -- Liverpool's Hard Days Night Hotel has paid tribute to John Lennon today with the release of 70 white balloons to mark the legendary's singer's birthday.
The Beatles-inspired hotel invited personal friends of John Lennon to release the balloons, bearing messages into the sky left by fans and devotees.
The event was organised to pay tribute to Lennon's release of 365 helium filled balloons during his first full art exhibition, You are Here which opened on the 1st July 1968.
Special guests including the Beatles former booking manager, Joe Flannery attended, along with Bill Harry, the creator of Mersey Beat, a 1960's newspaper devoted to the Liverpool Music Scene. Harry also attended Liverpool College of Art, where he became friends with Lennon and Stuart Sutcliffe and has written numerous books documenting his interviews with The Beatles.
Bill Harry commented, "It is an honour to be invited to the Hard Days Night to commemorate Lennon's 70th birthday in the city where John's career began. I have many personal memories of John as a young musician and it is a fitting tribute to be invited here today to celebrate all he achieved throughout his lifetime."
One fan wrote, "You will forever be in our hearts and souls. Thank you John for the wonderful music and memories we have when we hear your songs. Miss you always."
Hard Days Night Hotel Manager Mike Dewey added, "The hotel wanted to commemorate John Lennon's 70th birthday by offering fans the opportunity to pay tribute to the legendary singer by bearing their own personal message on the balloons ahead of his birthday on Saturday. We would like to thank all the fans and devotees who contributed their very special messages."
Hard Days Night will be paying tribute to Lennon all day Saturday to mark the star's official 70th birthday by playing Lennon music all day inside the hotel, while Beatles tribute band, The Mersey Beatles will be returning to the hotel this Friday for a live concert special to commemorate some of Lennon's most famous hits.
