Paul McCartney claims Sony is devaluing his Beatles rights

On Wednesday, Paul McCartney responded to Sony/ATV's claim that he brought an "unripe" lawsuit seeking confirmation he'll reclaim rights to Beatles songs next year. His lawyer wrote the judge, "As long as Sony/ATV refuses to disavow any right to sue...McCartney has a cloud over the title to his works, which devalues his rights."

Sony says Paul McCartney lawsuit over Beatles songs is unripe

Paul McCartney waited decades for his opportunity to reclaim rights to songs he authored as a member of The Beatles. Now, Sony/ATV Music Publishing is telling a judge he should have to cool his heels a little longer. McCartney sued in the US in January, but Sony clearly wants an English court deciding limitations on the rights reclamation.

A brief history of the ownership of the Beatles catalog

Last week, Paul McCartney sued music publisher Sony/ATV to regain his ownership stake in the Beatles catalog. If successful, it would end a long and painful battle for McCartney over the ownership of his own songs, involving everyone from early Beatles manager Brian Epstein to Michael Jackson, who bought the Beatles catalog in 1985.

Paul McCartney sues Sony/ATV for Beatles music rights

Paul McCartney sued Sony Corp's music publishing arm on Wednesday in federal court in New York, seeking to reclaim copyrights to 267 Beatles songs that Michael Jackson acquired two decades before his death. Sony/ATV Music Publishing called the lawsuit "unnecessary and premature" in an emailed statement.
