Pandora's legal fight with RIAA could have drastic effect on artists

Whoever wins the legal battle between Pandora and the world's biggest record labels over payments for songs released before February 15, 1972, could fundamentally change how artists make a living. "It's obvious they want to show disrespect for past artists and writers," says Steve Cropper, guitarist for Booker T. and the M.G.'s.

Update: Pandora plans to fight record companies in court

Record labels including EMI are in the process of suing streaming music provider Pandora for back royalties. Specifically, they want to raid Pandora's wallet for songs played that were made before 1972 that aren't subject to federal copyright protection. Pandora says that it is confident in its legal position and of course plans to fight.

Pandora sued by record companies over music made before 1972

The biggest online radio service, Pandora, infringed copyright playing music recorded before 1972, including songs by the Beatles, a group of record companies, including Capitol Records, has claimed in a lawsuit, accusing Pandora of "massive and continuing unauthorized commercial exploitation" of thousands of recordings.
