Beatles Bootlegs reaches Billboard 200 despite $40 price tag

The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963 hit number 172 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the week of 12/27. Released as an iTunes exclusive on Dec. 17, the compilation collects 59 Beatles tracks leading up to its first studio album in 1963, including 44 live tracks from their performances on BBC, as well as 15 studio outtakes.

Inside this week's 'secret' Beatles and Beach Boys releases

Fans who check iTunes every Tuesday morning for new releases were surprised to see fresh titles from The Beatles and The Beach Boys this week. New collections from both acts, especially The Beatles, are usually heralded with huge press campaigns. Strangely, neither had press releases to announce their existence.

Beatles Bootlegs '63 zooms to top of iTunes album chart in one day

"The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963" became available around the world the morning of Dec. 17. By 12 a.m. ET Wednesday, it was the top-selling rock album and the fourth best-selling album on the service overall. There was no fanfare, not even a press release when the release finally did appear on iTunes.

The case of iTunes and the missing Beatles tracks

Apple records was widely rumoured to be reluctantly releasing rare Beatle tracks via iTunes today to comply with copyright law. But scour the site for the mythical Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963 and they are nowhere to be found. The 59 rare recordings appeared on iTunes today, before promptly disappearing again.

European copyright laws lead to rare music releases

Thanks to the EU's new copyright law, fans of some musicians who made recordings in the 1960s are likely to be treated, for the foreseeable future, to annual batches of previously unissued material, in limited, hard-to-find editions. Normally eager to publicize their releases, labels are doing their best to keep these ones secret.

Beach Boys, like Beatles, reportedly doing similar digital bootleg release

Following yesterday's news of the iTunes release "Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963" coming Dec. 17, it has now been noticed that Amazon has added a listing for a similar digital compilation by The Beach Boys called "The Big Beat 1963," also to be released on Dec. 17. The 22-song track list includes various demos by Brian Wilson.

iTunes to release digital only compilation to counter Beatles bootlegs

The Beatles will reportedly release "The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963," a digital-only album of Beatles rare tracks exclusively to iTunes next week that will include studio outtakes and more songs recorded live for the BBC. The 59-track release, which has not yet been officially announced, will take place Dec. 17.
