Video: Ringo Starr on his new album

These days, Ringo and Paul McCartney seem to be treasuring each other. Starr remains touched that Macca showed up at his 70th birthday party at Radio City Music Hall. "I had no idea he was coming," he recalls. "He jumped up to do the Beatle track, Birthday. Nobody told me that he snuck in, and that he rehearsed with the band."

Review: Ex-Beatle longs for Liverpool on new album Ringo 2012

One look in the mirror was all it took for ex-Beatle Ringo Starr to find the best producer for his 17th solo record, "Ringo 2012," Starr claims. Unfortunately, looks can be deceiving and Starr might have done better shopping around someone to make this release more interesting. As it stands, "Ringo 2012" is equal parts reflection and rehash.

Back in 1973, Ringo Starr released "Ringo," which featured appearances from all of his former bandmates and which remains the signal work of his solo career. "Ringo 2012" is meant to induce nostalgia for "Ringo" and for Ringo, a musician of limited range and endless charm who doesn't have to do much except show up and pound the skins.

Review: First single from Ringo 2012

Ringo Starr exposes his own Achilles heel on his first single from Ringo 2012. The track Wings is a less passionate, border-line lifeless vocal performance of a previously released song from the 1977 Ringo the 4th album, and the singer is drowned out for much of the three-and-a-half minute track.

Ringo Starr's next new album coming out in January

Ringo Starr's 17th solo studio record, and his second on Hip-O/Ume will be released on January 31, 2012 in the United States, and internationally on January 30. Titled simply "Ringo 2012" and produced by Ringo, it was recorded in LA and mixed in England by Ringo and Bruce Sugar, and features 9 songs.
