Paul McCartney explains how Beatles wouldn't exist without Chuck Berry

In early 1958, Chuck Berry released "Sweet Little Sixteen," a song that would change the course of music history. It ignited the urge to celebrate rock and roll in kids throughout America, but it also traveled the world and influenced the Beatles during their defining years, some of their biggest hits were covers of Berry songs.

Video: Chuck Berry and John Lennon rocking and rolling together

John Lennon and Yoko Ono co-hosted the Mike Douglas show in 1972. One of his guests that week was rock 'n' roll legend Chuck Berry, on the show they teamed up to perform Memphis and Johnny B. Goode, the first meeting between Lennon and Berry. The video of this performance is now available on the internet.

On the passing of Chuck Berry, along with a recent pic of him and Chuck together, Paul McCartney posted on his official website PaulMcCartney.com, "Chuck Berry sadly passed away over the weekend. He was one of rock 'n' roll's greatest poets. He will be missed but remembered by everyone who ever loved rock 'n' roll."

Chuck Berry, the man who invented rock and roll, who passed away on Saturday at 90, inspired most of the greatest rock stars of the last century. John Lennon once said, "If you tried to give rock 'n' roll another name, you might call it Chuck Berry." Ringo Starr honored him by quoting a lyric from the song Rock and Roll Music on twitter.
