John Lennon may have never started The Quarrymen without best friend

John Lennon insisted on Pete Shotton's participation as a member of his first band, The Quarrymen skiffle group. Pete was assigned the washboard. It wasn't so much Shotton's musical ability, but more having the support of his friend in the band. In fact, without Pete, John may have never pursued starting the group.

The Beatles, Pete Shotton and Me

Beatles journalist Bill King looks back fondly on an evening of Beatles stories and more with the late Pete Shotton. He said, "Although Pete and John's relationship grew more distant after the arrival of Yoko Ono on the scene, Shotton particularly disagreed with portrayals of Lennon as being dominated by his wife...he totally adored her."

A few words about Pete Shotton

It wasn't easy being John Lennon's friend, and Yoko didn't make things any easier. The late Pete Shotton, John's childhood and closest friend, said, "He always made me feel special, made it clear he was desperate for my company, especially when he was depressed and fed up, which he was for many years."

Tributes paid after Pete Shotton passes away

On the passing of Pete Shotton, his step son, Phillip Gouldbourn, said, One thing he was really proud of was that he was at times the only person...who was allowed in the studio with the band when they were recording." Mersey Beat newspaper founder Bill Harry said, "Pete was the closest friend John ever had, apart from The Beatles."

John Lennon's best friend Pete Shotton dies at 75

Pete Shotton, John Lennon's best friend during their childhood days in Liverpool and a member of Quarrymen, has passed away. He was 75. Shotton met Lennon at Dovedale Primary School when they were six. In 1956, Lennon decided to form a skiffle group called the Quarrymen, and Shotton joined on percussion, playing a washboard.
