Paul McCartney remembers Phil Everly

Today on his official website, Paul McCartney issued a statement remembering Phil Everly. He said, "Phil Everly was one of my great heroes. With his brother Don, they were one of the major influences on The Beatles. When John and I first started to write songs, I was Phil and he was Don."

The Everly Brothers Show performed live in 1970 for an album of Everly Brothers covers. At first glance, the album appears to be little more than your standard live ragbag of '50s Everly classics and rock'n'roll oldies, but it also contains a stunning twenty minute medley that includes The Beatles' The End from Abbey Road.

Trivia: The Everly Bros. as Marines in San Diego

Few over the weekend for Phil Everly mentioned that Phil and Don Everly spent six months in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves in 1961 and 1962, or that the brothers did their basic training at Camp Pendleton, and when the brothers performed on Ed Sullivan in 1962, they proudly wore their Marine dress uniforms.

Tributes have poured in today for US musician Phil Everly of the Everly Brothers, including US guitarist and friend Duane Eddy, Queen guitarist Brian May, lyricist Sir Tim Rice, English guitarist Albert Lee, Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong and singer Nancy Sinatra.

On Saturday, musicians and fans across the world reacted with sadness and nostalgia to Phil Everly in Burbank, CA, as they remembered a lost era and a lost sound.
