Official Update: Capitol Albums Vol. 2 replacement info

by David Haber, What Goes On Managing Editor

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Original sleeves no longer required to be returned! Click here!

Earlier today on What Goes On we reported some preliminary information about the return of the Capitol Albums Vol. 2 discs with the incorrect mono mixes that we could not at that time confirm as official.

We can now say all the info we previously posted was correct, and the return policy is now official.

This official notice is from the Capitol Records web site:

Dear Customer,

It has been brought to our attention that two of the discs in the original manufacturing run of The Beatles' box set "The Capitol Albums Vol. 2" (0946 3 57497 2 4 / 0946 3 57716 2 6), namely "Rubber Soul" and "Beatles VI", contain mono recordings which were not the original mixes of the mono masters intended to be included in this historic release.

If a consumer purchases one of these box sets and is dissatisfied, Capitol/ EMI are prepared to ensure their satisfaction by implementing the following process.

Capitol/EMI will replace the two discs within 60 days of purchase. To obtain a replacement copy directly from EMM, the consumer should do one of the following:

1. Call 800-468-2362 and provide information on their CD purchase. They will also be asked to return the two CDs to EMM.

Or

2. Request a replacement copy by writing to:

EMI Music Distribution
Customer Fulfillment Operations
1 Capitol Way
Jacksonville, IL 62650-1095
Attn: Director of Quality Assurance

Consumer's name, address, original dated receipt and the two existing CDs in their accompanying jacket must be included.

Sincerely,
Regional Director

Even though this is the currently officially stated policy, we at What Goes On advise collectors might not want to send in their discs right away. The requirement of having to send your original discs with their original sleeves is probably upsetting some collectors who fear their sleeves will be damaged in transit, and although we don't have any official word to base this on, we suspect this part of the return policy might be changed at some point.

In addition, we now know that the report about "SK1" on the sticker of the set is also true. If you see a set in the store with "SK1" after the stock number on the sticker, then that set definitely has the correct mono mixes. The absence of "SK1" doesn't necessarily mean you have the wrong mono mixes, however. There have been reports that some fans received the correct mixes, even though their sticker didn't have the "SK1" on it.
