New Beatles insider book launches in Liverpool tomorrow
Joe Flannery's new book on The Beatles, Standing in The Wings - The Beatles, Brian Epstein And Me, launches tomorrow with a star-studded event at Liverpool's Beatles Story.
Joe Flannery has been described as the "Secret Beatle", and, as the business associate and partner of Brian Epstein, he became an integral part of The Beatles" management team during their rise to fame in the early 1960s. Standing in the Wings is a biography of Flannery"s life, his account of the era that was the swinging sixties, and his time with The Beatles. It includes an insight into the controversial dismissal of Pete Best from the group, Brian Epstein"s fragility, and the importance of the Star Club in Hamburg to The Beatles' career.

Quiet until now, Joe tells his and The Beatles story as he remembers it. From the early days of handling their bookings, negotiating the Merseyside promoters and putting them up after late night gigs, to being their go to guy for guidance on social etiquette and driving lessons. Flannery remains one of the few "Beatle people" in Liverpool to have the respect of the surviving Beatles. Indeed shortly before John Lennon"s murder in 1980, it was Flannery who was one of the last people in the UK to talk to the great man.
Standing in The Wings is a timely and revealing look at Flannery's personal and professional relationship with Epstein and his close links with the Fab Four. It is a fresh perspective from the man known to the Beatles as Flo Jannery, considers issues to do with sexuality in 1950s Liverpool, and reveals the vagaries of the music business at that time and the hazards of personal management in the "swinging sixties." It includes a foreword by international bestselling author Philip Norman.
The official book launch takes place tomorrow, May 14 at 7pm at the Replica Cavern, The Beatles Story, Albert Dock. Performances on the night include Lee Curtis (Joe's brother), Beryl Marsden, Local Rock band The Shakers, and two other local singer songwriters.
VIPs confirmed for the launch event include Lee Curtis, Joe's brother, Julia Baird, John Lennon's sister, Roag Best, Pete Best's brother, Freida Kelly, former Beatles Fan Club President, Phillip Norman, author of Lennon: The Life, Shout! and a soon to be McCartney biography, Pete Price, Radio City DJ, Linda McDermott, Radio City DJ, Colin Hanton of The Quarrymen and Beryl Marsden, Liverpool club singer.
The Beatles Story and Joe Flannery will also be holding a book signing event the following Saturday, May 18, at 11-4pm an the Beatles Story Starbucks, Albert Dock, Liverpool, a chance for fans to meet Joe, the official Cultural Ambassador of Liverpool.
