Bystander on Abbey Road cover passes away
[Posted by Dave Haber on Saturday, 02/16/08 1:43 pm] [Full Blog] [Tweet] [Facebook]

Longtime Florida resident Paul Cole, who was caught while on vacation in London in 1969 in the photo that appears on the cover of the Beatles' Abbey Road, passed away Wednesday at the age of 96.

In the picture, taken at 10 a.m. on Aug. 8, 1969, Mr. Cole can be seen standing next to a police van. He had been chatting to the policeman when he noticed the four Beatles crossing the road, while being photographed by a man standing on a step-ladder in the middle of the road. He remembered many years later he thought they looked like "kooks".

It wasn't until a year after the photo was taken that he noticed himself in the picture on the cover of the record, and had to convince his kids that it was really him.
