Colin Eaton reports for Beatles News from Liverpool:

Fans of the Late Beatle John Lennon gathered together tonight in Liverpool to pay their respects to the music legend as the world marked the 30th anniversary in 1980. The vigil was the high point of a remarkable day, which started with a mark of remembrance at Cavern Walks.

Fans braved a temperature of -4 degrees centigrade to gather around the John Lennon Peace and Harmony Monument in Liverpool One. They joined enthusiastically with Jim Softley and sang John Lennon songs such as In My Life, Imagine, Give Peace a Chance, Across the Universe, All You Need Is Love and Twist and Shout. Poems written as a tribute to the late great Beatle were read by by Rachel McGladdery, the official Liverpool Poet and Isobel Malimoski and Wesley Byrne.

Jerry Goldman, the Managing Director of the Beatles Story in Liverpool thanked fans for turning up to the event and said that now the world will know we have our monument in Liverpool. He had commented earlier that, "This has been a remarkable day and a fitting tribute to a son of the city with people from all over the world gathering to pay their respects to one of the world's great icons. Lennon's ability to inspire whole new generations even 30 years after goes to show how remarkable a person he was."

The vigil marks the first time that Liverpool has had a place for people to gather to celebrate the life of Lennon and his legacy of peace through his music. The Peace and Harmony monument was unveiled in October 9th on the anniversary of Lennon's birth by his son Julian and first wife Cynthia.
