New novel about Astrid and Stu launches in London
[Posted by Dave Haber on Monday, 03/14/11 5:38 pm] [Permalink] [Tweet] [Facebook]
October 1960, Hamburg. Astrid Kirchherr has finished studying fashion and is working as an assistant for her former lecturer, the photographer Reinhart Wolf. Her relationship with Klaus Voormann, a young graphic artist, has long since been punctuated by arguments and is slowly disintegrating. One evening, after yet another fight, Klaus leaves the flat and roams through the city alone. In the middle of the night, he's once more standing at Astrid's door, desperate to tell her what he has just discovered in St. Pauli: five young Englishmen playing rock ?n' roll under the name of The Beatles.
After a series of conversations with Astrid Kirchherr, Arne Bellstorf has created a heart-felt graphic novel based around the tragic love story between the young photographer and the musician and artist Stuart Sutcliffe. The book, "Baby's in Black," is both a tender portrait of that relationship and a love letter to the Hamburg subculture of the sixties that helped shape the beatles.
About Stuart, Astrid said, "Suddenly the images I had conjured up in my mind disappeared and something new stood in their place. That was the moment in which I saw those faces on the stage... First John, and then slowly the others... Until eventually, Stuart turned around. He had exactly what I had been looking for in Klaus, and that certain something, which I immediately recognised... and which I couldn't believe I had found."
The celebration of the publication of Arne Bellstorf's graphic novel "Baby's in Black" takes place at Underbar, located at 53 Dorset Street in London, this Wednesday, March 16, from 6:30 PM to 9 PM. Food and drink will be served, there will be great music, and the author will sign and sketch copies of the book bought during the evening. Space is very limited and RSVPs are absolutely essential for anyone coming to the launch. RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org or call 020 7487 4395.
Mandolay Hotel celebrates Beatles 50th Anniversary
[Posted by Dave Haber on Monday, 02/21/11 5:46 pm] [Permalink] [Tweet] [Facebook]
It may well have been twenty years ago today that Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play but it's an astonishing 50 years this month that The Beatles first played the legendary Cavern Club in Liverpool.
To mark the anniversary The Mandolay Hotel in Guildford, England, is hosting a celebration concert featuring the UK's no.1 tribute band The Silver Beatles on February 26th.
|The Silver Beatles|
Described by no less an authority as Cynthia Lennon as "uncannily like the original in every way," The Silver Beatles have been entertaining audiences at home and abroad for more than fifteen years, recreating the sound and atmosphere generated by the original band. All the hits are played brilliantly by these fine musicians and of course there is always plenty of the famous Scouse humour in evidence as well.

Julian Lennon's White Feather Exhibition extended through June
[Posted by Katie Hickox on Monday, 01/31/11 1:44 pm] [Permalink] [Tweet] [Facebook]
Due to an unprecedented demand from fans from all over the world, Julian and Cynthia Lennon's 'White Feather: The Spirit of Lennon' exhibition will extend its run at Liverpool's Beatles Story until June 2011.
The exhibition includes many unique family artifacts that give rare insight into what it was like to grow up as the wife and son of a man who has taken on iconic status. It's this uniquely personal approach that has touched thousands of fans as they visit Liverpool and has in turn inspired Julian to create his own book of personal memorabilia; proceeds from which go to his White Feather Foundation.
|Artifacts from the White Feather exhibition|
The White Feather exhibition increased visitors at The Beatles Story 17% in 2010. Jerry Goldman, Managing Director of Beatles Story comments, "We were coming to the end of the agreed season and still people were coming from all over the world to see White Feather Exhibition as part of their experience of Liverpool. We're really pleased that we have the opportunity to host this wonderful collection for a few months longer."
For more information, check out the exhibit's page at Beatles Story or visit www.whitefeatherexhibition.com.
