New Sgt. Pepper book to be celebrated at Beatles symposium
Beatles author/historian Bruce Spizer has just announced the imminent release of his 9th book on The Beatles, The Beatles and Sgt. Pepper: A Fans' Perspective, a 50th Anniversary celebration of the legendary album.
Through essays by Beatles scholars such as Al Sussman, Frank Daniels, Piers Hemmingsen, Bill King and the author himself, Spizer covers the full gamut of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band history augmented with over 100 color and original black-and-white images. He also includes a wonderful section of fan memories, with comments and photos from noted celebrities, rock icons, and "everyday people."
Spizer will be feted with a Book Release Party on Friday, September 15 at Beatles at the Ridge in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, where he is the Featured Speaker for the 2017 Beatles Authors and Artists Symposium. Headlining a panel of noted Beatles scholars such as Lanea Stagg, Dr. Kit O'Toole, Dr. Ken Womack, Sara Schmidt, Jude Southerland Kessler, film maker Cevin Soling, and artists Rande Kessler and Enoch Doyle Jeter, Spizer will address symposium attendees on "Sgt. Pepper at 50."
"Last summer I wrote an essay on Sgt. Pepper," Spizer commented, "and as the 50th anniversary approached, I decided to build a book around the essay rather than have it published in a magazine. My initial idea was to have a few fellow fan/authors contribute to the book. But then I expanded the concept to include fan recollections of their first experience with Sgt. Pepper.
"When I solicited fan impressions and memories about the landmark LP, I thought I might get a few dozen people writing in. But then the stories starting pouring in and by the time my deadline had passed, I had over 80 wonderful fan recollections and a couple of priceless pictures taken of fans back in 1967 with the album. As I read through the stories, I realized that my Sgt. Pepper experience was not unique-we had all been impacted by the album in so many favorable ways. Sgt. Pepper changed lives. Fifty years later we're still talking about it!"
Jude Southerland Kessler, Chairperson for the Beatles at the Ridge Symposium remarked, "We were thrilled to book Bruce Spizer as our Featured Author for the 5th Annual Authors and Artists Symposium coming up September 15-16, 2017. At the time, we had no idea that he was releasing a new book on Sgt. Pepper for the event. Quite happily, our festival theme this year is "Sgt. Pepper and The Summer of Love!"
In addition to the book release party, the celebration will feature face painters, balloon artists, jugglers, musicians, sidewalk chalk contests, and an Art Happening led by artist Enoch Doyle Jeter. As Kessler said, "Walnut Ridge, Arkansas is going to resemble a scene from 'Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite.' Bruce's new book will be the wonderfully delicious icing on our Pepper cake!"
Spizer's book release party will be held 15 September in The Studio on Main Street, Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, and will feature a special 50th Anniversary cake, Beatles-themed prizes for guests, and live Beatles music by teen musician, Cameron Hicks. Attendees will also get to stroll through the Argenta Collection, an impressive collection of rare Beatles photos. All Beatles at the Ridge festival events are free. Attendees are encouraged to book nearby hotels soon as accommodations fill up quickly.
